Medica Centre
The Client
Medica Centre is a sophisticated and highly developed concept that brings together specialist medical practitioners across all fields of healthcare. The Medica Centre is a superbly designed purpose constructed building, where healthcare professionals work independently in their private practices with access to all the specialist fields providing full diagnostic, surgical and interventional facilities not normally available within a single building.
The Challenge
A step up from typical commercial sites, high security measures were required throughout the building. Multiple tenancies on each floor had different security needs and had to be considered individually.
As it was a full build, KINGS Security worked from conceptual tender documentation and drawings. The system had to be almost entirely designed in-house by our team of engineers.
The project commenced in March 2009 as a hole in the ground, known in the construction industry as a wet cement project. . A large building with 9 car park levels below ground and 9 floors above ground, KINGS project managers needed to be across all the construction phases to ensure we were able to install all our cable and infrastructure within the confines of the buildings walls and floors.
Another challenge we faced nearing the completion of the project was critical IT infrastructure had not been deployed in the building, meaning KINGS had to install temporary infrastructure in order to test and commission the security systems we had installed.
KINGS Solution
KINGS Security Systems provided a turnkey solution consisting of a Honeywell video surveillance system, Honeywell ProWatch alarm and access control system, Aiphone audio and video intercom system and a Jacques IP help point system with public address and background music system. High and low level integration was employed across systems where required to provide seamless operation and ease of use.
Five Honeywell Fusion Digital Video Recorders provide high level recording and storage capabilities as well as remote management software interfacing them together as one complete video management system. The cable infrastructure for the 140 analogue cameras is CAT5E with baluns, future proofing the installation for easy conversion to IP cameras.
A Honeywell ProWatch access control and alarm system manages user access in to and around the building (130 access control points across 18 levels), as well as providing alarm management for intruder detection. Biometrics and iris scanners were also deployed in high security areas such as pharmacy and drug stores.
The wide-ranging Aiphone intercom system with video and audio units at entrances and within the building is integrated with the video surveillance and access control systems where specified to allow the Security Managers to view and control access to secured areas from the security concierge or control room.
The IP based Help Point system is integrated with video surveillance system so that when a help point is activated the relevant camera feed will be displayed on the video wall for viewing and communication with the relevant parties. This system also incorporates a public address module that provides background music across the building.
With plenty of room for expansion on the access all the security systems as well as networking infrastructure, the Medica Centre has a security system that complements the high level of design and technology in the building, as well as allowing for future additions and upgrades.
This was a highly complex project that was delivered ontime, on budget and to the complete satisfaction of the security management team.
Due to the high standard of this installation an in-depth case study was written by John Adams of Security Electronics and Networks. To read the article click here
